The meeting room across from my office is being painted — a nice, corporate red — and the smell wafting my way is not unlike a huge, uncapped Sharpie. I’m sure there are teenagers somewhere in Romania who would envy my position right about now. But, since huffing was never my thing, the smell is starting to make my brain hurt. Right behind my eyes.
Other than that, today is a very average Monday morning in Germany, which is probably like any Monday any where in the western world. I’ve found German Sundays, however, to be incredibly depressing and very different from the American ones. Sundays here are meant for walks in the woods, for small excursions to neighboring towns for a cup of coffee — and the whole thing is to be rounded up with the entire nation collectively watching Tatort. The weekend is officially over when the closing music begins.
Call me materialistic, but I think this collective depression on Sundays here stems from the fact that everything is closed. Shops are only allowed to be open on four Sundays throughout the year, and the people go absolutely ape shit.
But, on the bright side, we get three days of Easter here (Good Friday, Easter Sunday and, the bonus Easter Monday). And, because the Germans are really becoming more and more American at heart, many stores are offering midnight shopping on Thursday. And now the churches are going ape shit, and all I wonder is if it is even physically possible for me to stay awake long enough to enjoy such an offer.
