Affirmation

A few days ago, I got an e-mail from the editor of a competitor publication (uh…work related, of course), praising an interview I had done and telling me he wishes he had thought of it for his magazine. Boo.yah.

The amount of euphoria this brought me made me realize how little praise I (or any of my colleagues, for that matter) actually get for the work I do. By “little” I mean “none.” I should mention that we are going through a time of severe financial turmoil, where we get lots of bad news that is always punctuated with “but keep giving your all, bitches.” I understand the importance of keeping up a high level of quality work when the times are tough, yet after that e-mail the other day, I suddenly realized how beneficial a little ego-stroking would be for all of us.

I mean, honestly: I know my boss does not really read the newspaper I make. I don’t need a pat on the head, but the e-mail from our competitor at least gave me a bit of confirmation that someone reads it. Plus it gave me a little insight as to why some married people end up cheating on their spouse.

But all in all, it made me feel like a gigantic badass.

Well, you are a gigantic badass. But I totally get your beef. We're constantly losing staffers due to layoffs or people generally fleeing this business. We're finally back to hiring, but the mentality has always been that we all just need to work harder to try to put out the same amount of quality stuff. There is no giving in, even when it's obvious that a staff that's 30 percent smaller cannot possibly turn out the same quantity of work. So we do it, because that's what we do, and the only thing that happens is that management now expects that we will do whatever they ask of us. Oh, and this is in the same year they froze salaries and stopped the company match to the 401K. There's a reason people hate their jobs in this business, and management is making it so much worse than it needs to be. Sigh. Apparently that's been bugging me for a while...

Hey y'all... Yeah, Sara, 30% is good. That's how much they want to reduce us by. Gah.
