Dear Harper – Month 14

You are currently sleeping on my lap, making typing an arduous affair. You have a nasty cold that is apparently making your brain melt and leak out of your nose. It has also made it impossible for you to sleep soundly since Tuesday; which means your mother has also not gotten that much sleep. Also, I desperately have to pee, but that’s neither here nor there.

Moving on to the non-virus-related things you’ve been doing: You really do understand most things we say to you, both in German and English, and this makes us really proud. And it kind of makes up for the fact that you don’t seem to realize that your feet are for walking, not your knees. Although you can even pick the pace up to a scamper on your knees. So it’s clear that you are focusing more on language right now. At the table, when you’re not throwing your food to Lilly, you’ll try to feed us something (usually kindly pre-moistened by you, thanks). When we eat it, you’ll ask something that sounds like, “Good?” Or, the German version, “Lecker?” You also like to wave good-bye in any situation where you sense someone may be leaving the room; even when we’re talking to Grandma on Skype and it’s time to hang up.

You also like to point to things, and we assume that means you want us to tell you what they are called. And when you want to be picked up, you’ll hold out both of your hands. You do that a lot, and since you weigh like a billion tons, both Daddy and I have awesome biceps. At least in one arm.

And, after months and months of seeing it, you had your Helen Keller Moment recently and realized what the sign for “milk” means AND how to do it yourself. Your boob-occupation time has thus skyrocketed as of late. It has, however, cut down on the amount of whining you do when it comes to wanting to nurse. If I don’t react right away to your signing for milk, you will wave your hand directly in front of my face, then show me the milk sign. Just to be on the safe side, I guess. And now that you’re sick, you literally spend all day and all night nursing. OK, not literally, but it sure as hell feels like it.

You had your first mommy-free night of your life this month, when I had to go to Zurich for a press conference. You and Daddy survived, contrary to my fears. I naively only took my hand pump along, which lead to me thinking more about my boobs than about Clariant’s annual report. I talked to you and Daddy on Skype, but you had a meltdown when you made the sign for milk into the webcam and realized that you could not get to your beloved boobies.

You also like to put things on your head and crawl around. We are very happy to see that you have the same dumb sense of humor as your father and me. You also like to growl, which is a noise you hear often from your BFF Lilly. Because seriously Harper, Lilly isn’t really one for sharing her food with you. But then again, she should be eternally grateful for your love for her; it gets her all sorts of non-dog-food related eats. You share everything with Lilly, although sometimes you are shocked when Lilly actually eats all of whatever it is you want to give her. And this generosity on your part has kind of turned Lilly into an annoying asshole who constantly sits under the table, waiting for edible gifts from heaven.

Your very favorite tune is not something I can make as your song for the month, since it is the 30-second into to The Office. Daddy got the first five seasons on DVD from Grandma for his birthday, so we’ve been watching it a lot. And as soon as you hear the beginning, you start to dance … in a baby kind of way. You’ll bob your head and swing your arms back and forth. The other day you woke from a dead sleep to sitting up and clapping when you heard the theme song.

But for now, we’re all hoping that this freaking cold goes away soon, you poor little goopy-eyed baby.

Love,

Mama
