The Name Game

A few weeks ago, Björn and I were thinking about names for our impending arrival, which got us to thinking about our own names. Björn said his mother named him after the 1970s hearthrob tennis star Björn Borg, which I guess is legit and all. It then occured to me that I didn't know how my mom decided to name me Brandi and why she decided to spell it with an"i" rather than a "y." I had always assumed that the name was inspired by another '70s phenomonon, the band Looking Glass and their song "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)."

Before I continue, let me just say that we are being very careful with our name selection, making sure it can be pronounced in German and English, sounds nice for a little girl and a grown woman, not too popular, etc. This is apparently not a trait either of us received from our own parents.

So, I called my mom and asked. She said, "Well, I thought I'd spell your name with an 'i' because I like the 'i' on the end end of my name so much." Her name is Patti. When asked as to how she picked the name Brandi, she said, "I had a friend who had the most beautiful Golden Retriever named Brandi, and everytime I visited her, the dog would always follow me around and ignore everyone else."

"So, uh, you named me after a dog?"

"Well, yeah. But she was really beautiful."

Ha! That's brilliant.

I was named after weather, if it makes you feel any better. Apparently it was overcast and my dad thought it looked like the same color outside as my eyes were.

That was after my nom nixed "Liberty Bell" as my monocle.

Um, my first post and I'm so distracted by baby I put in the name of your blog instead of the word I meant.

Look forward to such brain blips in a few months. :)

Strangely enough, I understood what you meant. I guess I read "moniker." And all my brain does any more is stop working. Like that Simpsons where Homer says, "Let's go back to that...building...thingie...where our beds and TV...is."

Were you born in 1976? That would explain Liberty Bell. And, at first, my mom wanted to name me Amber Mist, which could not have more of a roach-clip, 1970s- Harlequin-romance-novel-cover sound to it.

And anyway, the word "Mist" means "crap" in German, so I guess I got lucky with just being named after booze.
